“Welcome to QuickChat! How are you doing?”: Using computational methods to understand engagements with youths in an online text-based service.
People Involved:
Gerard Chung, Department of Social Work, FASS, NUS
Benjamin Yeo, Head of Fei Yue Youth Services
A short summary of the project’s aims:
We are looking at 2,000 text-based chat (TBC) transcripts from online youth engagement sessions provided by a local social service agency in Singapore. Using textual data analysis, we want to understand session and conversational characteristics and evaluate their associations with outcomes. The analysis focuses on structural features, therapist communication skills, user expressions, and dyadic interactions in the online chat environment. Findings will inform best practices for online chat counselling, improve therapist training, and ultimately enhance support for youth mental health needs in Singapore.
