Recap: NUS CSSH Launch Event

We are delighted to share highlights from the official launch of the NUS Centre for Computational Social Science and Humanities (CSSH) held last Wednesday, March 4.

The event marked an exciting milestone for interdisciplinary research at the National University of Singapore, bringing together faculty, students, and partners to celebrate the launch of a centre dedicated to advancing research at the intersection of technology, society, and the humanities.
We extend our sincere appreciation to Professor Liu Bin, Deputy President (Research and Technology) at NUS, for delivering the opening remarks and officiating the ribbon-cutting ceremony together with Dean Tulika Mitra, Dean Lionel Wee, Professor Atreyi Kankanhalli, Professor Peter Millican, Associate Professor Miguel Escobar-Varela, and Associate Professor Dandan Qiao.
The programme featured presentations from the CSSH Co-Directors on the Centre’s vision and research agenda, as well as exciting highlights including:

  • The Singapore History + AI Hackathon prize presentation, awarded by Professor Bernard Tan
  • Project showcases by Assistant Professor Nur Hani Zainal and Associate Professor Min-Yen Kan
  • A thought-provoking keynote, “Humanities and AI: Modelling Culture Across Disciplines,” delivered by Professor Meredith Martin (Princeton University).

A heartfelt thank you to our speakers, collaborators, and all participants from across academia, industry, and government for contributing to the vibrant discussions throughout the afternoon.
We are especially grateful to the CSSH Management Team — Atreyi Kankanhalli, Peter Millican, Miguel Escobar-Varela, and Dandan Qiao — along with the many colleagues, staff, and student volunteers who worked behind the scenes to make this launch possible.
We look forward to the exciting collaborations and impactful research that will emerge from CSSH as NUS researchers continue to explore how computational methods can deepen our understanding of culture, society, and human behaviour.
