This project investigates whether AI-generated summaries can enhance patients’ understanding of their health conditions, improve treatment adherence, and lead to better health outcomes.
The study enables us to examine whether poor patient retention of medical information stems from memory limitations—addressed by providing the recording and transcript—or from attentional and cognitive constraints—addressed by the provision of AI-generated summaries. The intervention also has practical implications for both clinicians and patients: it allows clinicians to share patient notes with colleagues and enables patients to share them with family or caregivers, potentially improving chronic illness management and overall health outcomes.
