About Us

The Centre for Computational Social Science and Humanities (CSSH) established on 16 July 2024, serves as a nexus for interdisciplinary research, blending the methodologies and tools of computing with the theories and inquiries of social science and humanities disciplines.

The motivation for computational social science and humanities research arises from the increasing complexity and scale of social phenomena, coupled with the growing availability of digital data and computational resources. CSSH aims to address a diverse range of problems in areas such as social media, digital platforms, health and social care, environment, and heritage and culture, thereby advancing knowledge, informing decision-making, and addressing pressing societal challenges.

Nationally, computational social science has become a key priority for Singapore for modelling social behaviors in a number of domains. Work on digital humanities is also receiving recognition within policy and industry sectors related to the arts, history, and culture among others. Concurrently, in international academia, research on computational social science and digital humanities is gaining momentum.

CSSH has a large team of academics across NUS with expertise ranging from computing and new media to geography, linguistics, public policy, healthcare, environment and social work. The research team along with external partners from government, industry, and other universities will study issues such as digital literacy in social media use, consumer welfare in digital platforms, computational models of social behavior, care for vulnerable groups in digital environments, and the preservation and analysis of the rich cultural heritage of Singapore and its neighboring societies. The center thus serves as a dynamic focal point for interdisciplinary research, innovation, and collaboration that will position NUS globally as a leading hub in computational social science and humanities.
